Director ID reporting requirements from 1 July 2027 – CAS 360 Australia

Australia's business registers are being updated to make them easier to use and more accurate. From 1 July 2027, new laws under the Treasury Laws Amendment (Business Registries Stabilisation and Uplift) Act 2026 will require companies to provide director IDs to ASIC when registering a company and updating company details.

There is no change to your obligations yet. ASIC will release further guidance before 1 July 2027, and we will update this article as it becomes available.

What's changing

The changes are designed to:

reduce the risk of fraud and identity misuse
improve the accuracy of company records
make it easier to identify company directors
improve the quality and usability of registry information.

How it will work

Director IDs

Companies will need to provide director IDs to ASIC through company registration and reporting processes, including the annual review and when notifying changes to directors' details.

Over time, the companies register will display whether a company has provided director IDs for its directors.

Service addresses and electronic contact addresses

From 1 July 2027, officeholders will be able to lodge a service address. A service address can be published instead of a residential address, while still giving a reliable address where documents and notices can be served. Officeholders will continue to provide their residential address to ASIC through existing reporting obligations.

Companies and officeholders will also start to lodge electronic contact addresses, so ASIC can communicate with them more efficiently.

CAS 360 can produce an ASIC Director ID Letter alongside the existing ABRS Director ID Letter in document production:

Annual Review: always available
Incorporation (Form 201): available once the company has at least one director
Company Change (Form 484): available when a Director or Alternate Director has been newly appointed.

What you need to do now

Keeping company and director details up to date now will help avoid delays or issues when the new requirements start.

Directors should

make sure they have a director ID. If not, apply through ABRS
view their director ID through ABRS and update any details that have changed since they applied
keep their director ID secure and provide it to their company.

Companies and authorised representatives should

check company and officeholder details are up to date
confirm all current directors are correctly recorded and former directors have been removed
update any incorrect names, addresses or contact details.

Who is impacted by these changes?

These changes apply to companies and company directors, including where an individual is a director of a registered Australian body or a registered foreign company.

What if my company has multiple directors?

You'll need to collect the director ID of each current director and provide them to ASIC.

Where can I go to view or update my director ID details?

Go to Manage your director ID on the ABRS website.

Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS), part of the Australian Taxation Office, verifies director identities and administers director IDs. ASIC registers companies, adds director ID information to the companies register, and enforces director ID obligations.

Will my residential address still appear on the companies register?

From 1 July 2027, officeholders will be able to lodge a service address to provide an alternative to publishing their residential address. You will still need to provide your residential address to ASIC. ASIC will provide further guidance before the change starts.

Who will be able to see information on the companies register?

ASIC has finished consulting on future access settings for the companies register and is reviewing feedback. A consultation feedback report is expected in March 2027. See Consultation Paper 391 for details of the proposals.

I received a flyer about this with my company annual statement. What is it?

Some companies have received an information flyer from ASIC with their annual statement pack. The flyer gives early notice of these changes for awareness only; there is no immediate change to your obligations.
