A “trading name” is commonly used to describe the name a business operates under. In Australia, trading names are now known as business names and are registered through ASIC.
Important clarification
A business name is separate from your company name. Registering a business name does not change your company details with ASIC.
A company may choose to register a business name if it wishes to trade under a different name to its registered company name.
Do I need to register a business name?
You must register a business name if:
- You are carrying on a business under a name that is not your company’s registered name, or
- You want to use a different name for branding or trading purposes
You do not need to register a business name if:
- Your company trades only under its exact registered company name

| ABN* | The Australian Business Number (ABN) is a unique identifier issued by the Australian Business Register (ABR) |
| ABN Effective Date | Only required if the ABN application is yet to be processed |

| ASIC Key | A unique number used in ASIC Connect that establishes your identity and protects your business information by making sure only you, and those you have authorised can access it. See ASIC Website for more information |
