A “trading name” is commonly used to describe the name a business operates under. In Australia, trading names are now known as business names and are registered through ASIC.
Important clarification
A business name is separate from your company name. Registering a business name does not change your company details with ASIC.
A company may choose to register a business name if it wishes to trade under a different name to its registered company name.
Do I need to register a business name?
You must register a business name if:
- You are carrying on a business under a name that is not your company’s registered name, or
- You want to use a different name for branding or trading purposes
You do not need to register a business name if:
- Your company trades only under its exact registered company name

Forms Prepared
At this stage CAS360 does not support any ASIC Business Names lodgement services or forms.
However, you can record a business name within CAS 360 for internal reference and document purposes.

Troubleshooting: "Cease Date cannot be before Renewal Date"
If the business name record already has a Renewal Date saved that is later than the date you want to enter as the Date Ceased (for example, the business name was previously renewed for a future term, but is now being transferred to another company or otherwise ceased before that renewal takes effect), CAS 360 will block the save with the error "Cease Date cannot be before Renewal Date".
This is a date validation check. CAS 360 will not let a Date Ceased be recorded earlier than the Renewal Date already on file, since the record shows the business name as renewed through to that later date.
To resolve
- Open the business name record and go to the Registrations & Renewals tab.
- Clear/delete the existing (future) Renewal Date.
- Enter your Date Ceased (and update the Renewal Date to the same date, or an earlier one, if you want a record of it) and save.
